What is Turo Car Rental?

However, while planning your vacation, you may want to consider the unthinkable. What happens if you crash a Turo rental car? Luckily, Turo has thought of that too.

How Do Protection Plans Work with Turo?

Turo Protection Plans for Renters

When selecting the car you want to rent on Turo, you will be offered a protection plan. They offer three different protection plans, including:

  • Premier
  • Standard
  • Minimum

According to the Turo website, “If you don’t choose a protection plan, you’ll be relying solely on your own applicable personal insurance coverage to cover loss or damage to the host’s vehicle.” This means you will have full financial liability for anything that relates to the car.

In addition to Turo protection plans, Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company covers liability insurance up to the state minimum limits.

While Turo does not require renters to hold car insurance in New Mexico, if you do have car insurance, be sure to check with your carrier on potential coverage you may have when renting a car with Turo. Simply ask your insurance provider if you have peer-to-peer car sharing coverage to ensure that you are protected.

Insurance and Protection Plans for Turo Hosts

If you choose to become a host with Turo, you will have the third-party liability coverage through Travelers. However, there are different plans you can choose that vary based on the amount you earn from a trip and the amount of coverage you have for your vehicle.
The plans include:

  1. More Peace of Mind Plan, that allows hosts to earn 70% of the trip price with only $250 of damage liability, and up to $750,000 in coverage.
  1. Balanced Plan, that allows hosts to earn 80% of the trip price with $1,500 of damage liability, and up to $750,000 in coverage.
  1. More Earnings Plan, that allows hosts to earn 90% of the trip price with $2,750 of damage liability, and up to $750,000 in coverage.

While the “More Earnings Plan” may seem like the best way for hosts to make money, it’s important to consider that if someone wrecks a Turo car, the hosts have to pay $2,750 out of pocket
